Gwendy's Button Box - Book Review

When a mysterious stranger offers 11-year-old Gwendy an even more mysterious box, Gwendy’s life starts to change. While some things in Gwendy’s life suddenly seem too good to be true, Gwendy begins to wonder if there isn’t something eerily sinister about her “button box.”

Gwendy's button box book review

A collaboration between Stephen King and Richard Chizmar, Gwendy’s Button Box is a 175-page novella that is over far too soon! I read this book over the span of about 2 hours and 3 glasses of whiskey. The book draws you in from page one, keeps you hooked, and leaves you begging for more!

Gwendy’s Button Box Plot Summary

Set in 1974, Gwendy is your average 11-year-old girl. She’s not the prettiest, smartest or most popular, and is spending her summer determined to lose weight before middle school. One afternoon, a strange man offers her a wooden box with a combination of buttons and levers – each with a different “power.” Torn between curiosity and the responsibility of heeding the stranger’s warning of what the buttons can do, Gwendy must fight the temptation to use the box for her own personal gain, while struggling to ensure that the box doesn’t take control of her!

Gwendy’s Button Box Book Review

Overall, the book was a fascinating read and I’d have no problem reading a full-length novel based on this plot and characters. Some people question whether the book is worth the price, considering its less than 200 pages long. I’d say it’s definitely worth a read, and probably can do with a second and third read as well.

Final Rating: 9.5/ 10

An excellent read. Just wish it was longer.
